What Should I Bring on a Stormy Pirates Boat Charter?
One of the best things about a Stormy Pirates adventure is that we provide almost everything you need for an incredible day on the water. From drinks and snorkeling equipment to experienced crew members and unforgettable destinations, we’ve got you covered.
To make your day as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, we recommend bringing the following items:
Swimsuit
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to swim, snorkel, float, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands, so don’t forget your swimsuit!
Cover-Up or Sun Shirt
A lightweight cover-up, rash guard, or sun shirt is highly recommended for additional sun protection throughout the day. These are especially helpful between snorkeling stops and while relaxing on the boat.
Towel
Stormy Pirates does not provide towels, so please bring your own beach towel for swimming, snorkeling, and lounging in the sun.
Forgot yours? Stormy Pirates logo towels are often available for purchase in our Boat Day Boatique.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Protecting both your skin and our beautiful Caribbean reefs is important.
Please bring a reef-safe, non-aerosol sunscreen that does not contain harmful reef-damaging ingredients such as:
- Oxybenzone
- Octinoxate (Octyl Methoxycinnamate)
- Homosalate
- Octisalate
- Octocrylene
- Avobenzone
Using reef-safe sunscreen helps preserve the coral reefs, marine life, and crystal-clear waters that make the Virgin Islands so special.
Sunglasses and Hat
The Caribbean sun can be strong year-round. Sunglasses and a hat can help keep you comfortable throughout the day.
Cash or Credit Card for Lunch and Shopping
Many of our destinations have restaurants, beach bars, boutiques, and gift shops.
While most locations accept credit cards, some remote islands and beach bars may occasionally experience internet outages or operate on a cash-only basis. Bringing some cash ensures you’re prepared for lunch, souvenirs, beverages, or island shopping.
Crew Gratuity
Tipping your Captain and crew is customary and greatly appreciated.
Like many hospitality and tourism professionals throughout the Virgin Islands, our crews work hard to create a safe, memorable, and fun experience for every guest.
The customary gratuity is 20% of your trip price.
Examples:
- $200 trip = $40 gratuity
- $500 trip = $100 gratuity
- $2,000 private charter = $400 gratuity
Of course, gratuities are always at your discretion and should reflect the level of service you received.
Can I Bring My Own Drinks or Snorkel Gear?
Absolutely!

What Boat Is Used for the Baths & White Bay Adventure?
One of the most common questions we receive is, “What boat will we be on for the Baths & White Bay trip?”
The answer depends on the number of guests booked for your excursion, but rest assured that every vessel we use for this adventure was specifically designed to handle the waters between the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.
Why Does the Boat Matter?
The route from St. Thomas and St. John to Virgin Gorda travels through the famous Sir Francis Drake Channel. While beautiful, this stretch of water can occasionally be rough and challenging.
Unlike many charter boats that are designed primarily for calm coastal cruising, our vessels were selected and built specifically for safely and comfortably transporting guests between the USVI and BVI.
42′ Power Boats
Stormy Petrel & Pirates Penny
When there are 12 guests or fewer booked, your excursion will typically operate aboard one of our 42-foot power boats.
These vessels feature:
- Deep-V hull design
- Large center-mounted diesel engines
- Excellent stability in rough seas
- Comfortable seating
- Open bar
- Onboard restroom
- Professional Captain and First Mate
The deep-V hull allows these boats to cut through waves rather than bounce across them, providing a smoother and more comfortable ride through the Sir Francis Drake Channel.
Many guests specifically choose these boats because they enjoy the faster, more intimate experience offered by smaller groups.
55′ Power Catamaran
Gorda Pirate
When 13 or more guests are booked, the trip will typically operate aboard our 55-foot power catamaran, Gorda Pirate.
Gorda Pirate offers:
- Two spacious decks
- Exceptional stability
- Large shaded areas
- Comfortable seating throughout
- Open bar
- Restroom facilities
- Plenty of room to move around during the journey
Like our power boats, Gorda Pirate was specifically designed for the waters between the USVI and BVI and delivers a stable, comfortable ride even when conditions become challenging.
The Journey to Virgin Gorda
The trip from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Virgin Gorda typically takes between 1.5 and 1.75 hours.
The destination is one of the Caribbean’s most famous natural wonders:
The Baths National Park
The Baths gets its name from the massive batholith granite boulders that line the shoreline between:
- Devil’s Bay Beach
- Spring Bay Beach
These giant rock formations create a maze of caves, grottos, pools, and passageways unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean.
What Happens When We Arrive?
We dock at Spanish Town Marina on Virgin Gorda and take a short 5-minute taxi ride to The Baths National Park.
While your Captain clears British Virgin Islands Customs and Immigration, our First Mate leads guests on a guided tour through the park.
This is one of the biggest advantages of traveling with Stormy Pirates. Rather than simply dropping you off with a map, our crew personally guides you through the National Park and shares local history, hidden viewpoints, and photography opportunities along the way.
How Long Do We Spend at The Baths?
Guests spend approximately:
- 2.5 hours on Virgin Gorda
- About 2 hours exploring The Baths National Park
During your visit, you’ll experience:
- Devil’s Bay Beach
- Spring Bay Beach
- The famous caves and boulder formations
- Hidden photo opportunities
- Local history and island stories
Is the Baths Hike Difficult?
The trail through The Baths is approximately 1.8 miles long and includes:
- Uneven terrain
- Slippery rocks
- Ladders
- Sandy pathways
- Areas where you may wade through waist-deep water
Guests should be comfortable walking on uneven surfaces and navigating stairs and ladders.
If you have limited mobility or prefer not to do the hike, you’re welcome to relax near the restaurants, gift shops, and observation areas at the top of The Baths.
After completing the hike, guests typically have 20–30 minutes to:
- Swim at Spring Bay Beach
- Relax on the beach
- Enjoy a drink at Poor Man’s Bar
Next Stop: White Bay, Jost Van Dyke
After departing Virgin Gorda, we travel approximately one hour by boat to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke.
This world-famous beach is home to:
- Soft white sand
- Crystal-clear water
- Beach bars
- Great swimming
- Caribbean island vibes
Guests spend approximately 2 hours at White Bay.
Our Best Tip for White Bay
Order your lunch as soon as you arrive.
The crew will remind you of this before you swim ashore.
Many guests make the mistake of browsing gift shops or ordering drinks first, only to discover there is a wait for food later. Ordering lunch immediately allows you to maximize your time enjoying the beach, swimming, shopping, and relaxing.
Understanding the Distance
One of the biggest misconceptions about this trip is that the Baths and White Bay are located close to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
They are not.
This excursion covers more than 70 miles by boat and visits the two most popular destinations in the British Virgin Islands during a single day.
That is what makes this trip so unique.
While staying in the U.S. Virgin Islands, you’ll have the opportunity to visit both Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke in a single day without changing hotels, taking ferries, or arranging transportation on your own.
Is This the Right Trip for Me?
This trip is perfect if you want to:
- Visit the two most famous destinations in the BVI
- Experience an international adventure from the USVI
- Explore The Baths National Park
- Relax at White Bay
- Learn about Virgin Islands history and culture
- Maximize your vacation time
This trip may not be ideal if you want:
- Several hours at each location
- A slow-paced beach day
- Minimal travel time
Because of the distance involved, it is impossible to spend half a day at each destination and still visit both locations.
If your goal is to spend most of the day at a single beach or island, a private charter may be a better fit.
The Bottom Line
Will you spend all day at each destination?
No. The distances involved make that impossible.
Will you travel more than 70 miles by boat, explore The Baths National Park with a guided tour, visit world-famous White Bay, learn about the Virgin Islands, and experience the two most iconic destinations in the British Virgin Islands while staying in the U.S. Virgin Islands?
Absolutely! And that’s exactly why this trip is one of the most popular excursions in the entire Caribbean!!

St. John Departure Location
If you’re staying on St. John, your departure location will be:
National Park Dock
Cruz Bay, St. John
U.S. Virgin IslandsThis centrally located dock is within walking distance of many Cruz Bay hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants, bars, and shops.
Our crew will meet you at the dock prior to departure and help you get settled aboard.
Parking Information
One of the most frequently asked questions is:
“Is parking available?”
Yes, paid parking is available near both departure locations.
However, just like most waterfront districts and downtown areas throughout the United States, free parking is extremely limited and often unavailable.
If you are driving a rental car, we strongly recommend:
- Arriving early
- Allowing extra time to locate parking
- Planning time to walk from your parking location to the dock
- Completing check-in before the scheduled departure time
Our boats depart on schedule, and we don’t want your vacation to start with unnecessary stress.
How Early Should I Arrive?
We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before departure to allow time for:
- Parking
- Check-in
- Waivers (if applicable)
- Bathroom stops
- Purchasing merchandise from the Boat Day Boatique
- Boarding the vessel
Not Sure Which Departure Location Is Best?
No problem! Our office is happy to help determine the most convenient departure point based on where you’re staying and which excursion you’ve booked.
Whether you’re departing from Red Hook on St. Thomas or Cruz Bay on St. John, you’ll be just moments away from an unforgettable day exploring the beautiful waters of the Virgin Islands.
-
The answer is both!
Stormy Pirates proudly serves guests staying on both St. Thomas and St. John, with convenient departures from each island.
While all of our boats are physically docked in St. Thomas, we operate daily from both St. Thomas and St. John, making it easy for guests throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands to join our adventures.
Why Are Your Boats Kept in St. Thomas?
One of the biggest reasons is simple:
St. John Does Not Have a Marina
Unlike St. Thomas, St. John does not have a full-service marina capable of accommodating and supporting a fleet of charter vessels.
Because of this, many boats operating from St. John spend their nights on mooring balls.
At Stormy Pirates, we’ve chosen a different approach.
All of our vessels are kept at:
American Yacht Harbor
Red Hook, St. Thomas
U.S. Virgin IslandsWhile marina slips are significantly more expensive than moorings, we believe the benefits create a better experience for our guests.
Benefits of Keeping Our Boats in a Marina
Cleaner Boats & Equipment
Every evening, our vessels return to a reliable fresh-water source.
This allows our crew to thoroughly wash and rinse:
- Snorkel gear
- Masks and fins
- Bean bags
- Floats
- Mats
- Cushions and seating areas
- Boat decks and railings
Without access to fresh water, salt buildup accumulates quickly on both boats and equipment.
Keeping our boats in a marina allows us to provide cleaner vessels, cleaner equipment, and a more comfortable experience for every guest.
Better Provisioning
Being located in a marina makes it easier for us to stock our vessels daily with:
- Fresh ice
- Beer
- Water
- Soda
- Open bar supplies
- Snacks
- Safety equipment
This helps us maintain the high standards our guests have come to expect.
Supporting Our Crew & Community
Long-term housing on St. John is extremely limited and increasingly expensive.
By basing our operations in St. Thomas, our crew members have access to more housing opportunities while reducing pressure on St. John’s already limited housing supply.
This allows us to recruit and retain outstanding crew members without competing for housing needed by local residents.
Where Do Your Trips Depart?
St. Thomas Guests
Most St. Thomas guests depart from:
American Yacht Harbor
“P” Dock
Red Hook, St. ThomasCheck-in takes place at our Boat Day Boatique located next to The Tap & Still.
St. John Guests
Guests staying on St. John are conveniently picked up at:
National Park Dock
Cruz Bay, St. JohnThis allows St. John visitors to join our most of our excursions without having to travel to St. Thomas.
So, Are You a St. Thomas Company or a St. John Company?
We’re both.
Our boats are docked and maintained in St. Thomas, but we proudly provide departures, pickups, and service for guests staying on both islands every day.
Whether you’re vacationing in St. Thomas or St. John, you’ll receive the same exceptional Stormy Pirates experience, professional crew, premium equipment, and unforgettable day on the water.
The Bottom Line
- Boats are docked at American Yacht Harbor in St. Thomas
- We depart from both St. Thomas and St. John
- We serve guests staying on both islands
- Marina storage allows cleaner boats, cleaner equipment, and better provisioning
- We proudly consider ourselves a charter company for both St. Thomas and St. John
No matter which island you’re staying on, Stormy Pirates makes it easy to experience the very best of the Virgin Islands.

One of the biggest advantages of booking a private charter with Stormy Pirates is that you get to choose where you’d like to have lunch.

Whether you’re looking for a casual beach bar, a floating taco stand, fresh seafood, a luxury waterfront restaurant, or simply a secluded beach picnic, we’ll help you create the perfect day.
Is Lunch Included?
Lunch is not included in the price of your private charter.
This gives you the freedom to choose the dining experience that best matches your tastes, budget, and itinerary.
Our crew is happy to make recommendations and help you select a lunch destination before your trip.

- How much time to spend enjoying each location
Our crew will help guide you, but the day is built around your group and your idea of the perfect Virgin Islands adventure.
-
Many guests are surprised to learn that August, September, and October can be some of the most beautiful months to visit the Virgin Islands.
The water is typically at its warmest, the islands are less crowded, and you’ll often feel like you have entire beaches, bays, and snorkeling spots all to yourself.
However, these months also fall within the Caribbean’s traditional hurricane season, and that means some businesses choose to close for annual maintenance, staff vacations, or seasonal breaks.
Will Excursion Still Operate?
Absolutely!
Stormy Pirates continues to operate most excursions throughout much of the season, weather permitting. Guest safety is always our top priority, and we closely monitor weather conditions every day.
If conditions are safe, you’ll still enjoy an incredible day exploring the Virgin Islands.
Will We Still Visit Beautiful Places?
Without a doubt!
The stunning beaches, crystal-clear water, world-class snorkeling, hidden coves, and breathtaking scenery that make the Virgin Islands famous don’t close for the season.
You’ll still experience many of the destinations and natural attractions that guests travel from around the world to see.
Why Are Some Businesses Closed?
Many restaurants, beach bars, gift shops, and resorts use August, September, and October as an opportunity to:
- Complete annual maintenance
- Renovate facilities
- Give staff well-earned vacations
- Prepare for the busy winter season
Because of this, some of your favorite beach bars, restaurants, or attractions may be closed during your visit.
Is That a Bad Thing?
Not at all!
In fact, many of our crew members consider this one of their favorite times of year.
With fewer visitors and fewer crowded attractions, you’ll often enjoy:
- Quieter beaches
- Less crowded snorkeling sites
- Easier restaurant reservations
- More personalized service
- Better opportunities to interact with locals
- A more authentic island experience
Discover New Favorites
One of the unexpected benefits of traveling during the off-season is discovering places you may never have visited otherwise.
When a popular venue is closed, our crews often introduce guests to:
- Hidden beaches
- Local restaurants
- Lesser-known beach bars
- Secret snorkeling spots
- Quiet anchorages away from the crowds
Many guests leave saying they discovered a new favorite place they never would have found during the busy season.
A Different Kind of Virgin Islands Experience
If you’re looking for packed beach bars, busy marinas, and large crowds, the winter months may be a better fit.
But if you enjoy:
- Fewer tourists
- More room to relax
- Beautiful warm water
- Easier access to popular destinations
- A more laid-back island atmosphere
then August, September, and October can be an incredible time to visit.
The Bottom Line
Some businesses may be closed during hurricane season, but the natural beauty of the Virgin Islands remains as spectacular as ever.
Our crews know which locations are open, where the best conditions can be found, and how to create an unforgettable day regardless of the season.
In many ways, visiting during August, September, and October allows you to experience a quieter, more authentic side of the Caribbean — and perhaps discover a few new favorite places along the way.

Booking your Stormy Pirates adventure is easy!
To reserve your boat day, we only require a 20% deposit at the time of booking. This secures your seats or private charter and allows you to lock in your preferred date.
The remaining balance is due 48 hours before your scheduled departure.
How Can I Pay My Remaining Balance?
We offer several convenient payment options.
Credit Cards
We accept all major credit cards.
You may:
- Use the credit card already on file
- Pay with a different credit card
- Split the remaining balance between multiple credit cards
- Have different members of your group contribute toward the balance
We’re happy to accommodate whatever payment arrangement works best for your group.
Cash
Guests are welcome to pay their remaining balance in cash.
In fact, if you notify us in advance that you’d like to pay your balance in cash, you may qualify for our additional 5% cash discount.
Simply send us an email before your final payment is due, and we’ll make a note on your reservation.
Venmo
We also accept payments through:
@StormyPirates
Last 4 Phone: 2828
Venmo can be a convenient option for groups splitting costs among multiple travelers.
Can I Pay the Crew Gratuity with a Credit Card?
Yes!
Crew gratuities can absolutely be added to your credit card payment.
However, it’s important to understand that credit card processors charge transaction fees on every purchase.
For example:
- If you add a 20% gratuity to a credit card transaction, approximately 3% is typically deducted in processing fees.
- This means your crew effectively receives closer to 17% rather than the full 20%.
For this reason, cash gratuities are always preferred whenever possible.
This isn’t unique to Stormy Pirates—it’s true for restaurants, tour guides, bartenders, and hospitality professionals throughout the Virgin Islands and around the world.
Of course, gratuities are always voluntary and should reflect the level of service you received.
The Bottom Line
- 20% deposit due at booking
- Remaining balance due 48 hours before departure
- All major credit cards accepted
- Multiple credit cards can be used
- Cash accepted
- Venmo accepted (@StormyPirates)
- Crew gratuity can be added to a credit card
- Cash gratuities are preferred so the crew receives the full amount
If you have any questions about payments, discounts, or splitting balances between guests, our office is always happy to help.
-
One of the most frequently asked questions we receive is:
“How much should I tip the crew?”
Like bartenders, restaurant servers, tour guides, and other hospitality professionals, Captains and Crew Members in the Virgin Islands work in a service-based industry, and gratuities are an important part of their income.
Our crews work incredibly hard to create a safe, fun, and memorable day on the water for every guest.
Your Crew’s Day Is Longer Than Your Boat Day
While your excursion may last 6, 8, or 9 hours, your Captain and Crew are typically working much longer.
Before you arrive, the crew is busy:
- Cleaning and preparing the boat
- Loading drinks, ice, snacks, and supplies
- Checking safety equipment
- Preparing snorkel gear
- Reviewing weather and sea conditions
After you leave, they still have work to do:
- Cleaning the vessel
- Washing snorkel gear
- Restocking beverages
- Refueling
- Preparing for the next day’s adventure
An 8-hour boat day often means a 10+ hour workday for your crew.
What Is the Customary Gratuity?
If your Captain and Crew provide excellent service, the customary gratuity is:
20% of the price of your boat day
Examples:
- $200 trip = $40 gratuity
- $500 trip = $100 gratuity
- $1,500 private charter = $300 gratuity
- $2,000 private charter = $400 gratuity
As with any service industry, gratuities are always voluntary and should reflect the level of service you received.
Traveling With Friends or Family?
If one person in your group is handling the gratuity, it’s a good idea to discuss tipping expectations before the trip.
Many guests don’t realize the total cost of a private charter and may unintentionally contribute less than intended if they aren’t familiar with customary Virgin Islands gratuity practices.
A quick conversation before departure helps ensure everyone contributes fairly and avoids awkward conversations at the end of an amazing day.
How Do I Give the Gratuity?
Gratuities may be given directly to either:
- The Captain
- The First Mate
All tips are combined and shared equally among the crew members working your charter.
Cash or Credit Card?
Both are accepted.
Gratuities can be:
- Paid in cash
- Added to a credit card
- Paid through approved electronic payment methods
However, cash is always preferred.
Why?
Credit card processors deduct approximately 3% in processing fees from transactions. That means when guests leave a 20% gratuity on a credit card, the crew ultimately receives less than the full amount.
A cash gratuity ensures that 100% of your tip goes directly to the crew.
The Best Way to Thank Your Crew
Of course, gratuities are always appreciated.
But if your crew truly goes above and beyond, there’s something just as valuable:
Leave a Review and Mention Them by Name!
Positive reviews help recognize exceptional crew members and allow future guests to learn about the people who helped make your day so special.
Nothing makes a Captain or Mate smile more than seeing their name mentioned in a glowing review.
The Bottom Line
- Customary gratuity is 20%
- Captains and Crew work in a service-based industry
- Tips can be given to the Captain or Mate
- Crew members pool and split gratuities equally
- Cash is preferred whenever possible
- Reviews mentioning your crew by name are always appreciated
If your crew made your vacation more memorable, a gratuity and a kind review are the best ways to show your appreciation.
-
The online booking fee is a small convenience fee that allows guests to securely reserve their trip online, anytime, from anywhere in the world.
This fee helps cover the reservation technology, payment processing systems, fraud protection, confirmation emails, reminders, and other tools that make online booking fast and easy.
Is It Cheaper to Book Directly with Stormy Pirates?
Yes! Absolutely.
Even after the small online booking fee, booking directly through the Stormy Pirates website will always be the least expensive way to book your excursion.
We receive reservations through many third-party travel platforms, including:
- TripAdvisor
- Viator
- Expedia
- Booking.com
- Marriott Vacation Club
- Cruise excursion providers
- Online travel agencies
While these companies help guests discover our tours, they charge substantial commissions for every booking.
Those commissions are often built into the price you pay.
Why Are Third-Party Prices Higher?
When you book through a third-party website, that company collects a commission from the booking.
In many cases, the total price paid through a third-party platform is significantly higher than booking directly with Stormy Pirates.
By booking directly with us:
- You receive our best available pricing
- You save money compared to many third-party sites
- You communicate directly with our team
- You receive the most accurate information about your trip
- You support a local family-owned business instead of a large online travel company
The Best Value: Book Direct
Our website was designed to give guests the easiest and most affordable way to book.
Even after the small online convenience fee, most guests save money by booking directly rather than using a third-party travel site.
The Bottom Line
The online booking fee is simply the convenience of being able to reserve your adventure online.
If you’re looking for the best price, the most accurate information, and direct communication with the company operating your excursion, booking directly through Stormy Pirates will always your best option.

One of our favorite sayings is:
“A rainy boat day is better than a rainy beach day.”
In the Virgin Islands, a little rain is simply part of island life.
In fact, many guests are surprised to discover that an occasional tropical shower can actually make for a more comfortable day on the water. The rain cools things down, the cloud cover provides relief from the Caribbean sun, and the showers often pass as quickly as they arrive.
Does It Rain Every Day?
There’s a good chance you’ll see rain somewhere during the day every day of the year.
That doesn’t mean you’ll experience rain all day.
Virgin Islands weather is highly localized. It may be raining on one side of an island while the sun is shining on the other. Many rain showers last only a few minutes before moving on.
When Will Stormy Pirates Cancel a Trip?
Guest safety is always our number one priority.
We may cancel, delay, or reschedule a trip if:
- Wind conditions make boating unsafe
- Sea conditions become unsafe
- A full-day rain event is expected
- Thunderstorms are present
- Lightning is present
- Significant convective activity is forecast for the majority of the day
- Any other condition creates an unsafe environment for our guests or crew
What Happens If Stormy Pirates Cancels?
If WE cancel your trip due to weather or any other operational reason:
You will receive a FULL REFUND of your deposit.
No questions asked.
Our goal is always to provide a safe and enjoyable experience, and if we determine conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll make it right.
Who Decides If the Trip Operates?
The decision to operate, delay, modify, or cancel a trip belongs solely to the Captain and Stormy Pirates management team.
Captains Make the Final Decision
Our Captains are licensed maritime professionals with local weather knowlende who evaluate:
- Weather conditions
- Sea state
- Wind forecasts
- Radar
- Local observations
- Guest safety
Guests do not determine whether a trip operates or not.
What If the Forecast Looks Bad?
Here’s something every local learns quickly:
Virgin Islands weather forecasts are often wrong.
Forecasts frequently call for rain all day, only for the islands to enjoy sunshine and beautiful conditions.
Likewise, forecasts can call for sunshine and produce an afternoon shower.
For this reason, we rely on real-time observations, marine forecasts, radar, and local knowledge rather than generic weather apps.
Will You Contact Me If There Are Weather Concerns?
Absolutely.
If we have concerns about the weather, our team will proactively reach out to discuss options and keep you informed.
However:
If you do not hear from us, your trip is operating as scheduled.
Please arrive at the departure location at the time listed on:
- Your confirmation email
- Your reminder email
- Your reminder text message
Can I Cancel Because the Forecast Shows Rain?
Unfortunately, no.
Guests cannot cancel or delay a trip based solely on a weather forecast.
For example, if a guest decides at 11:30 PM that they don’t want to attend because a weather app predicts rain the next morning, but conditions are actually beautiful and the trip departs as scheduled, normal cancellation policies still apply.
The Virgin Islands often experience brief passing showers that have little impact on a day on the water.
The Bottom Line
- A little rain rarely affects a boat day.
- Tropical showers are common and often short-lived.
- Safety always comes first.
- Captains make all weather-related decisions.
- If Stormy Pirates cancels, you receive a full refund of your deposit.
- If you haven’t heard from us, plan on your trip departing as scheduled.
Many of our guests who worried about the weather beforehand later tell us they had one of the best days of their vacation.
After all, you’re already planning to get wet!
-
Many of our most popular excursions operate multiple boats on the same itinerary. While all guests visit the same destinations and enjoy the same Stormy Pirates experience, separate reservations are not automatically assigned to the same vessel.
If you’re traveling with:
- Friends
- Family members
- Wedding groups
- Bachelor or bachelorette parties
- Multiple families
- Cruise ship groups
and you’ve booked under separate reservations, please contact us as soon as possible so we can do our best to place everyone on the same boat.
Why Do I Need to Let You Know?
Our reservations system does not automatically recognize that separate bookings belong to the same group.
For example:
- One family may book under Smith.
- Another family may book under Johnson.
- Friends may each make their own reservations.
Without knowing you’re traveling together, our team may assign your reservations to different vessels.
How Do I Request to Be on the Same Boat?
Simply send us an email with:
- The names on each reservation
- Reservation numbers (if available)
- The date of your trip
- The excursion you’ve booked
Please email:
The earlier you contact us, the easier it is for us to accommodate your request.
Is Seating Together Guaranteed?
We’ll always do our best to keep groups together, but requests are subject to:
- Boat capacity
- Existing reservations
- Operational requirements
- Safety regulations
The sooner we know about your group, the better the chances we can place everyone on the same vessel.
The Bottom Line
If you’re traveling with others who booked separately and you’d like to enjoy the day together, please contact us as soon as possible.
A quick email before your trip helps ensure everyone can laugh, snorkel, explore, and create memories together aboard the same Stormy Pirates vessel.
-
Maybe… but with a little planning, most guests who are prone to motion sickness can still have an amazing day on the water.
All Stormy Pirates excursions operate on the ocean, and the waters surrounding the Virgin Islands naturally have waves and movement.
The Virgin Islands sit between two major bodies of water:
- The Atlantic Ocean to the north
- The Caribbean Sea to the south
Some days the water is calm and glassy. Other days there may be more wave action. Conditions can vary depending on weather, wind direction, and your itinerary.
I Get Motion Sickness. Should I Be Concerned?
If you’re prone to motion sickness, we strongly recommend planning ahead rather than waiting to see how you feel on the morning of your trip.
Many guests who follow these recommendations have little to no issues during their excursion.
As always, consult your physician to determine which option is best for you.
Recommended Motion Sickness Remedies
Dramamine or Similar Over-the-Counter Medication
Many guests have success with Dramamine or other motion sickness medications.
For best results, many doctors recommend taking the medication before symptoms begin, often starting the evening before your excursion.
Scopolamine Patches
Many frequent travelers and boaters prefer Scopolamine patches.
These require a prescription from your doctor and are often most effective when applied at least 24 hours before your trip.
Sea-Bands
Sea-Bands are a drug-free option that many guests swear by.
They work by applying pressure to the Nei Guan acupressure point on your inner wrist and are widely available online and through retailers such as Amazon.
Stay Hydrated and Rested
Getting plenty of sleep and staying hydrated before your trip can also help reduce the likelihood of motion sickness.
Do NOT Arrive Hungover
This may be our most important tip.
No motion sickness remedy works particularly well if you’re starting the day dehydrated and hungover.
If you know you’re prone to motion sickness, avoid excessive alcohol the night before and arrive well-rested, hydrated, and ready for your adventure.
Which Stormy Pirates Boats Are Best for Guests Concerned About Seasickness?
If motion sickness is a concern, we generally recommend our larger vessels.
42′ Power Boats
Stormy Petrel & Pirates Penny
These vessels were specifically built for Virgin Islands waters.
Features include:
- Heavy mono-hull design
- Deep-V hull
- Large center-mounted diesel engine
- Excellent stability
- Comfortable ride in rough conditions
Unlike some boats that ride over the tops of waves, these vessels are designed to cut through the waves, creating a smoother and more comfortable experience for many guests.
Sailing Catamarans
SP1 & SP2
Our sailing catamarans were designed for families and sailors crossing oceans and circumnavigating the world.
They offer:
- Wide beam for stability
- Spacious seating areas
- Comfortable ride
- Excellent performance in a variety of sea conditions
Many guests who are concerned about motion sickness appreciate the stability and space provided by our catamarans.
What If I Start Feeling Seasick?
Don’t be embarrassed—it happens!
Our Captains and Crew have helped thousands of guests enjoy the water comfortably and can often suggest:
- Better seating locations
- Fresh air options
- Hydration strategies
- Practical tips to help you feel better quickly
The Bottom Line
Most guests have no issues at all, but if you’re prone to motion sickness, preparation is key.
We recommend:
- Taking preventative medication before symptoms begin
- Considering Scopolamine patches or Sea-Bands
- Staying hydrated
- Avoiding alcohol the night before
- Choosing one of our larger vessels when possible
A little preparation can make the difference between worrying about the ride and enjoying one of the most memorable days of your vacation.
And remember: many guests who were initially concerned about seasickness later tell us they spent the day snorkeling, swimming, exploring, and wondering why they were worried in the first place!
-
Because you’re traveling internationally.
Any Stormy Pirates excursion that visits the British Virgin Islands (BVI), including destinations such as Virgin Gorda, The Baths, Jost Van Dyke, Norman Island, Cooper Island, or other BVI locations, requires guests to clear both British Virgin Islands Customs & Immigration and U.S. Customs & Border Protection.
To make this process as smooth and efficient as possible, we require a clear photo of your passport before your trip.
When Do I Need to Submit My Passport?
For all BVI excursions, passport photos must be submitted:
- At least 72 hours before departure whenever possible
- As soon as possible for reservations made within 72 hours of departure
The easiest way to submit your passport is through our secure electronic waiver system.
Why Does Stormy Pirates Need My Passport Information?
Before your trip departs, our Captains are required to submit an online pre-arrival application to British Virgin Islands Customs & Immigration.
This application includes:
- Passenger names
- Passport information
- Nationality
- Vessel information
- Arrival details
Without your passport information, we cannot complete the required registration process.
We Also Notify U.S. Customs & Border Protection
Because your excursion leaves U.S. waters and later returns to the United States, our Captains must also provide passenger information to U.S. Customs & Border Protection before returning.
Your passport information is required for both countries’ customs and immigration procedures.
We Complete the Paperwork for You
One of the benefits of traveling with Stormy Pirates is that our crew prepares the customs and immigration paperwork in advance.
Our Mates carefully complete the required forms before arrival to ensure:
- Names are spelled correctly
- Passport numbers are accurate
- Information is complete
- Forms are legible
- Customs processing is as fast as possible
Even a single incorrect number, missing detail, or illegible entry can significantly delay the customs process.
In some cases, mistakes can add an hour or more to your check-in time.
By collecting passport photos in advance, we help ensure that your arrival in the British Virgin Islands is quick, smooth, and stress-free.
Is My Information Secure?
Yes.
Passport photos are collected through our secure waiver and registration process and are used solely for customs, immigration, and legal travel requirements associated with your excursion.
What Happens If I Don’t Submit My Passport?
Unfortunately, guests who do not provide a passport photo cannot participate in British Virgin Islands excursions.
Without the required passport information, we cannot:
- Register your arrival with BVI Customs & Immigration
- Complete customs paperwork
- Submit required passenger information
- Legally transport you into the British Virgin Islands
For this reason, guests who choose not to provide a passport photo will not be permitted to travel on international BVI excursions.
The Bottom Line
Uploading your passport photo in advance allows us to:
- Register your trip with BVI Customs & Immigration
- Notify U.S. Customs & Border Protection
- Complete customs paperwork accurately
- Minimize delays at the border
- Give you more time to enjoy your day in the British Virgin Islands
A few minutes spent uploading your passport today helps ensure a faster, smoother, and more enjoyable international boat day tomorrow.
-
For most private charters, we recommend that cruise ship guests take a taxi from the cruise ship dock to our departure location in Red Hook rather than arranging a pickup directly from the cruise ship pier.
While we understand that a dockside pickup may sound more convenient, it often results in a longer, rougher, and less enjoyable boat ride.
Why Do You Recommend Departing from Red Hook?
All cruise ships dock on the southwest side of St. Thomas.
Most of our private charter destinations, including:
- St. John
- Christmas Cove
- Lovango Cay
- Lime Out
- The Pillsbury Sound
- The surrounding Virgin Islands
are located on the eastern side of St. Thomas.
The prevailing trade winds and currents in the Virgin Islands generally move from east to west.
This means that traveling by boat from the cruise ship docks to the eastern side of the islands often requires running directly into the wind and waves.
Depending on conditions, this ride can be:
- Wet
- Bumpy
- Rough
- Up to an hour or more in duration
A Taxi Is Usually Faster and More Comfortable
A scenic taxi ride from the cruise ship docks to Red Hook typically takes about 20 minutes.
By meeting us in Red Hook, you’ll begin your charter immediately in the more protected waters between St. Thomas and St. John rather than spending valuable charter time traveling across exposed water.
Most guests find this to be a much more enjoyable way to start their day.
Can You Drop Us Back at the Cruise Ship?
In many cases, yes!
If weather and sea conditions permit, and you’ve chartered one of our power boats, we may be able to provide a cruise ship drop-off at the end of your charter for an additional fee of
This service is available on:
- Classic Power Boats
- Axopars
- Hydrosport
This service is not available on our sailing catamarans.
Why Is the Return Trip Better?
At the end of the day, the ride back to the cruise ship is often much more comfortable because:
- The prevailing winds are generally behind us
- The current is working with us
- We travel along the beautiful southern coastline of St. Thomas
This allows guests to enjoy a scenic cruise back toward the cruise ship docks while maximizing their time exploring the Virgin Islands.
How Do I Arrange Cruise Ship Drop-Off?
Simply let us know when making your reservation that you’d like to add cruise ship drop-off service.
We’ll review:
- Your ship’s schedule
- Weather conditions
- Boat availability
- Sea conditions
and confirm whether the service will be available for your charter.
The Bottom Line
For the best use of your charter time, we strongly recommend:
✅ Taxi from your cruise ship to Red Hook at the beginning of the day.
✅ Optional cruise ship drop-off at the end of the day (weather permitting) on our power boats.
This allows you to spend less time traveling, more time exploring, and enjoy a smoother, more comfortable Virgin Islands boat day.

Almost certainly during our busiest season.
From November through July, we almost always meet or exceed the minimum number of guests required to operate our scheduled excursions.
Many departures fill completely during these months.
How Can I Tell If My Trip Is Confirmed?
We understand that vacation planning can be complicated, especially when you’re coordinating flights, accommodations, rental cars, and other activities.
To make planning easier, we mark trips on our schedule once they have reached the required minimum number of guests.
This allows you to:
- Book with confidence
- Know your trip is confirmed
- Plan the rest of your vacation around your excursion
- Avoid unnecessary uncertainty
You can also check your trip status at any time to see whether the minimum guest requirement has been met.
What Happens If My Trip Hasn’t Met the Minimum?
If your scheduled excursion has not yet reached the required minimum number of guests, our team will typically contact you approximately 5–7 days before departure.
At that time, we’ll often offer options such as:
- Switching to another confirmed departure date
- Moving to a similar excursion
- Reviewing alternative options that fit your schedule
Our goal is to give you plenty of notice so you can adjust your plans if necessary.
What Happens If the Trip Is Canceled?
In the rare event that a scheduled trip does not reach the 6-guest minimum and cannot operate:
You will receive a full refund.
There are no penalties or cancellation fees when Stormy Pirates cancels a trip due to insufficient bookings.
Why Do You Have a Minimum?
Operating a charter boat requires:
- Licensed Captains
- Professional Crew
- Fuel
- Insurance
- Drinks and provisions
- Customs fees (for BVI trips)
- Vessel maintenance
The minimum guest requirement helps us maintain the high-quality experience our guests expect while keeping excursions affordable and accessible.
The Bottom Line
- Scheduled trips require a minimum of 6 guests.
- Most trips easily meet this requirement from November through July.
- Confirmed departures are marked on our schedule.
- We’ll contact you 5–7 days in advance if your trip has not yet met the minimum.
- Full refunds are provided if Stormy Pirates cancels due to insufficient bookings.
Our low minimum guest requirement is just one of the reasons Stormy Pirates is able to offer some of the most reliable and guest-friendly excursions in the Virgin Islands.

One of the most common questions we receive at Stormy Pirates is:
“What’s the difference between The Baths & White Bay trip and The Baths, Cooper Island & Norman Island trip?”
The truth is that both trips are fantastic adventures that visit the world-famous Baths of Virgin Gorda. Neither is better than the other—they’re simply designed for different types of travelers.
If you’re trying to decide which trip is right for you, here’s our honest breakdown.
First, What Do Both Trips Have in Common?
No matter which adventure you choose, you’ll experience:
- The world-famous Baths of Virgin Gorda
- Crystal-clear Caribbean water
- Incredible scenery
- A full day exploring the British Virgin Islands
- The personalized Stormy Pirates experience
After visiting the Baths, however, the two trips take very different paths.
The Baths & White Bay
Our Most Popular Adventure
The Baths & White Bay excursion is by far our most popular trip, we’ve been operating this exact same itinerary since 1976!!!
Most departures between (November – July) will operate aboard Gorda Pirate, our spacious power catamaran, and many departures sell out, well in advance. This trip will most likely be full!!
Why is it so popular?
Because it combines two of the most famous destinations in the British Virgin Islands into one unforgettable day.
After exploring the Baths, we’ll head to the legendary White Bay on Jost Van Dyke, home to the famous Soggy Dollar Bar, powder-soft beaches, beach bars, tropical drinks, and a lively Caribbean atmosphere.
This Trip Is Perfect For:
- Extroverts
- Social travelers
- First-time visitors to the BVI
- Guests who love beach bars and island energy
- People who enjoy meeting lots of new friends
White Bay is one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, and that’s exactly why people love it. The beach is buzzing with activity, music drifts across the water, and there’s always something crazy happening.
If your ideal vacation includes meeting new people, sharing stories at a beach bar, and being in the center of the action, this is likely your perfect trip.
Important To Know
Lunch on this trip requires guests to swim from the boat to shore.
The swim is not difficult for most guests, but it’s something worth considering if you aren’t comfortable swimming or simply prefer not to get in the water.
The Baths, Cooper Island & Norman Island
Our Crew’s Favorite Adventure
While the Baths & White Bay trip is our guests’ favorite, the Baths, Cooper Island & Norman Island adventure is the favorite among our Captains and Mates.
Why?
Because it’s a more relaxed, intimate, and personalized experience.
Instead of heading to one of the busiest beaches in the Caribbean, this itinerary explores quieter destinations where the focus shifts from crowds and beach bars to beautiful anchorages, crystal-clear water, and enjoying the islands at a slower pace.
Because the groups are often smaller and the destinations are less crowded, our crew gets to spend more time getting to know each guest. By the end of the day, it often feels more like a day on the water with friends than a typical excursion.
This Trip Is Perfect For:
- Introverts
- Couples
- Families
- Guests looking for a smaller-group feel
- Travelers who enjoy a quieter atmosphere
- Guests who want a more personalized experience
No Swimming Required
One of the biggest differences between this trip and White Bay is that nothing requires you to swim to shore.
If you’d like to snorkel, you’re welcome to jump in and explore.
If snorkeling isn’t your thing, that’s perfectly fine too.
Many guests simply relax on the boat, float on a raft in the calm Caribbean water, enjoy the scenery, or soak up the sunshine while everyone else explores.
This flexibility makes the trip especially appealing for mixed groups where some people love snorkeling and others simply want to relax.
So Which Trip Should You Choose?
Choose The Baths & White Bay if:
✔ You love people, energy, and a lively atmosphere
✔ You enjoy beach bars and socializing
✔ You want to experience two of the BVI’s most famous destinations
✔ You don’t mind swimming to shore for lunch
Choose The Baths, Cooper Island & Norman Island if:
✔ You prefer a quieter, more relaxed day
✔ You enjoy smaller groups and a more personal experience
✔ You’d rather float, relax, or snorkel instead of a beach bar vibe
✔ You don’t want any required swims to shore
✔ You want to experience the BVI the way many locals and boaters enjoy it and not the way tourist do.
The Stormy Pirates Difference
At the end of the day, there isn’t a wrong choice.
One trip is lively, social, and full of energy. The other is relaxed, personal, and laid-back.
The best trip simply depends on your personality and the type of day you’re hoping to have.
Whether you’re sipping a Painkiller in White Bay or floating in the calm turquoise waters of Norman Island, our goal is always the same: to help you create memories that will last long after your vacation ends.
Can’t Decide? Here’s What We’d Do.
If you’re visiting the Virgin Islands for several days and want the best overall experience, our recommendation isn’t to do both Baths trips.
Instead, combine The Baths, Cooper Island & Norman Island with our Jost Van Dyke Funday.
Why?
Because the two trips complement each other perfectly.
The Baths, Cooper Island & Norman Island is a relaxing, laid-back day focused on beautiful anchorages, floating in crystal-clear water, and enjoying a more personalized experience with smaller groups.
The Jost Van Dyke Funday, on the other hand, is a fast-paced, action-packed adventure filled with beach bars, island hopping, great music, and plenty of excitement.
Even better, the two trips visit completely different destinations, so you’re not spending your vacation seeing the same places twice.
Many guests find this combination gives them the best of both worlds: one day to slow down and soak in the beauty of the British Virgin Islands, and another day to experience the fun, energy, and legendary beach bar scene that makes Jost Van Dyke famous.
One trip lets you relax.
The other keeps you moving.
Together, they create the ultimate British Virgin Islands vacation.

Are Children Welcome Aboard?
Absolutely! We love having young pirates aboard our adventures.
Children are welcome on all Stormy Pirates excursions and will enjoy the same incredible experience as the adults—snorkeling, exploring beautiful beaches, spotting sea life, and making memories that will last a lifetime.
Because every guest occupies a seat and receives the full Stormy Pirates experience, children are the same price as adults.
Safety is always our top priority. We provide all U.S. Coast Guard-required safety equipment, including properly sized life jackets for children. We also carry kid-sized snorkel masks, snorkels, and fins so even our smallest pirates can comfortably explore the underwater world.
Your children will be our top priority and will get a little extra attention and care. As a multi-generational family owned business, we have been doing this for sooooooo long that we have kids who joined us 20+ years ago are bringing their children to relive the same adventures.
Whether your little matey is a seasoned snorkeler or experiencing the ocean for the first time, our experienced crew is happy to help make their day safe, fun, and unforgettable. We’ve had kids less than a year-old snorkeling.
A quick note about Virgin Gorda – The Baths trips – This trip is not recommended for children less than 3.5 years old or children who aren’t adventurous. Children will have to walk on their own for at least 1.5 miles, over slippery rocks and up / down ladders. Children will not be able to be carried if they get tired. Our crews can help them by holding their hands. guiding and encouraging them, but it is too dangerous to carry a child through the rocks.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget towels, reef-safe sunscreen, and a waterproof camera—you’ll want plenty of photos of your young pirate’s adventure!
