Frequently Asked Questions

The Baths are on Virgin Gorda which is a British Virgin Island.

Jost Van Dyke is also a British Virgin Island.

Currently, the British Virgin Islands are closed to ALL day boat charters from the US Virgin Islands. No one knows when they will reopen to day boat charter traffic, or what the stipulations will be to travel back and forth across the international border. We are keeping all of our guests updated with the protocols put in place at this link. > Timeline of BVI Covid Protocols and regulation <

What happens when the British Virgin Islands opens back up?

If you are booked on one of our scheduled US Virgin Islands Boat Day, we will offer you the first spots on any of our British Virgin Islands scheduled charters, before we open them up to the general public for booking. You will have the option to stay on the trip you originally booked, or change over to a new BVI scheduled trip.

If you are booked on a private charter and you would like to go there, we will be happy to take you. Your private boat day is always customizable.

Captains & Crew Member in the Virgin Islands are considered, working in a “Service Based Industry.”

Our Captain and Crew members work very hard, to keep you safe and to make sure that you have an amazing day on the water.

Please keep in mind the days are very long and start well before you arrive at the dock and our days end well after you disembark. If your boat day is 8 hours, our work day will be 10+ hours.

Customary Gratuity is 20% of the price of your boat day if your crew does an amazing job.

  • If the price of your trip is $160.00, then your tip to the crew should be approximately $32.00.
  • If the price of your trip is $185.00, then your tip to the crew should be approximately $37.00.
  • If the price of your private charter is $1500.00, then the tip to the crew should be approximately $300.00
  • If the price of your private charter is $2000.00, then the tip to the crew should be approximately $400.00
**If you are traveling with friends who do not know what the trip costs and they are offering to pay the gratuity, please have a conversation with them about what the Customary Gratuity amount should be for then entire trip or the amount each person should contribute.**

At the end of the day, when paying the gratuity, you can give the tip directly to the Captain or the Mate. The Crew combine the tips and then splits them evenly.

If the Crew does an amazing job, there is nothing that shows your APPRECIATION more than a larger tip!!

A rainy boat day is better than a rainy beach day.

While on a boat, you are wet most of the day anyways, the fresh water rinse from the rain feels amazing!!

The rain will cool you down and the layer of clouds keeps the temperature comfortable.

Snorkeling during rain is also much better.

Chances are it may rain at some point during the day, especially during the month of Aug – Oct.
WE will cancel the trip or try to reschedule for the following reasons.

  1. IF the wind or sea conditions, make it unsafe to go out.
  2. IF it looks to be a full day rain out. Nobody wants to be in the rain all day.
  3. IF there is convective activity (thunder and lightning) in the area or forecast to be in the area the majority of the day.

**If WE cancel a trip due to weather or any other reason
YOU will receive a FULL REFUND OF YOUR DEPOSIT.**

Please note a few rules of a weather cancellation:

  • It will be our CAPTAINS, who will be the ones who make the decision to GO or NOT GO.
  • YOU are not the one who gets to decide whether or not the trip is cancelled or delayed.
    • For example: You CAN NOT text us at 11:30pm and say you don’t want to go because you think it “may be raining” in the morning. Then, when it ends up being a beautiful morning, not be able to show up at the dock on time and demand a refund or an extension on your day. (yes! this has happened)
  • WE will be the ones who will touch base with you on the MORNING of the trip and you should be ready to depart on time.
    • In most cases, the weather forecast is not dependable more than a few hours out. We will wait to see what the weather conditions are on the day of the trip and will plan to go or not go then, in the morning BEFORE your scheduled departure time.
  • When WE touch base with you in the morning, we will decide the following:
    1. Depart on time
    2. Delay the start time to “wait and see” what the day will look like.
    3. Cancel the trip and try to reschedule for a different day.
  • IF you DO NOT hear from us, then the trip will depart, as scheduled, at the time on your confirmation email, reminder email and reminder text message.

We try to include a lot of things on board to make your boat day as easy for you as possible, but there are a few things that you should bring.

  • Bathing Suite Coverup / T-shirt
  • Towels
  • Reef Safe, non aerosol sunscreen
    • DO NOT bring sunscreen to the island, if it has any of these ingredients
      • Oxybenzone
      • Octinoxate (Octyl methoxycinnamate)
      • Homosalate
      • Octisalate
      • Octocrylene
      • Avobenzone
  • Cash for Merchandise and Lunch.
    • Most places accept Credit Cards, but the wifi may not always work at some of the remote places and then it will be CASH only. Do not miss out by not having enough cash.
  • Cash for Crew Gratuity – Customary Gratuity is 20% of the price of your trip. Examples:
    • If the price of your trip is $160 then 20% = $32
    • If the price of your trip is $1500 then 20% = $300

We have many options available for Private Charters. Here is a detailed list of what your boat day will include on each boat.

The remaining balance is due on the day of your charter.

We accept the following payments on board all of our vessels.

  • All major credit cards
    • You can pay with the card on file or a different card
    • Your party can also pay split the payment and pay the remaining balance with several different cards.
  • Cash
  • Venmo (@StormyPirates)

Can the Gratuity also be paid on a credit card?

Yes, Your Crew’s Gratuity can also be added to your credit card. Please keep in mind the Credit Card subtracts a 3% processing fee on all purchases, so if you think that you are tipping the crew 20%, you are really only tipping 17%. This is why CASH is always preferred as gratuity whether it is on a boat day or in a restaurant.

We depart from both St. Thomas  &  St. John.

If you are staying on St. Thomas, we depart from “P” dock at American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook, which is on the East End of the island.

If you are staying in St. John, we will pick you up at the National Park Dock in Cruz Bay.

Just like in most major cities across the US, there is no free parking in either location, so please plan accordingly. If you have a rental car, please plan ahead and allow yourself plenty of time to find parking and walk to our dock for an on time departure.

All of our excursions operate on BOATS in the Ocean

The waters around the Virgin Islands will have waves. The waters offshore are not calm like a lake.

On the North Side of the Islands is the Atlantic Ocean, on the South Side is the Caribbean Sea. Where these two major bodies of waters come together it can be rough.

If you are prone to motion sickness, you can still have an amazing boat day by planning ahead. We suggest the following proven remedies BEFORE going out on the water.

As always, please check with your doctor to see which option will be best for you.

  1. Start taking Dramamine or similar type of OTC motion sickness medicine the evening before your boat day.
  2. Ask your doctor to prescribe Scopolamine patches, and start to wear them at least 24 hours before your boat day.
  3. Order some SeaBands off of Amazon, These work by applying pressure to the Nei Guan – an acupressure point on your inner wrist. Make sure to put it on before you get on the boat in the morning.
  4. Do NOT arrive at the boat hungover. Hangovers on Boat Days are not fun. There is no medicine that will stop motion sickness, if you are hung over.

If you are out on the water and start to feel sick, we try to have the following remedy’s on board.

  1. We have ginger ales and ginger chews on board every vessel.
  2. We have OTC Motion Sickness medicine. It is usually too late to take it once you are on board, but it may help you enjoy the last part of your day.
  3. We try to keep SeaBands on board for your use, while on board.

If you are prone to motion sickness, we also suggest planning your boat day on the following boats. These boats will be the most comfortable for you on these waters.

  • Our 42′ Power Boats (Pirates Penny or Stormy Petrel) – Both of these boats were built for these waters. They are heavy, mono-haul style power boats that cut through the waves, rather than hobby-horse over them like a power catamaran style boat. The large diesel engine is located in the center of the vessel, in the bilge, which creates lateral stability in even the roughest conditions.
  • Our Sailing Catamarans (SP1 & SP2) – Both of these boats were built for families and sailors crossing the oceans and sailing around the world. They were built for comfort and performance.
